Apple has finally announced the release of the Apple iPhone 14 models at its October 7th, 2022 event. This year, the company made some major changes to the size of the iPhones. The Apple iPhone 14 models have a 6.1-inches iPhone 14 and a 6.7-inches iPhone 14 Plus. The PRO model follows the same size with the iPhone 14 Pro having 6.1-inches and the iPhone 14 Pro Max getting 6.7-inches.
This means Apple ditched the mini model of the iPhone this year but we won’t be surprised if Apple decides to launch an iPhone 14 mini later this year or early next year to rekindle the interest in iPhone 14. While the physical size is a very noticeable change, it is however not the most important change and upgrades Apple made to the iPhone 14 models this year.
The iPhone 14 and 14 Plus gets new CPU and GPU cores while the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max get a new chipset, a new design, a new camera sensor, and a new emergency alert system. Let’s talk about these updates and how useful these upgrades are.
Apple iPhone 14 Models
Apple iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus
As stated above, the iPhone 14 features a 6.1-inches display while the 14 Plus gets a 6.7-inches display. Both iPhones are water and dustproof and according to Apple, the iPhone 14 Plus has the best battery life of an iPhone to date. A battery test will confirm this when the device is available for purchase.
The iPhone 14 and 14 Plus uses the old Apple A15 Bionic chip with 6 Core CPU and 5 Core GPU (the same number of cores in the iPhone 13 Pro Max). This means the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus will have similar performance as the iPhone 13 Pro Max (this is a better performance than the iPhone 13 and 13 mini).

In the camera segment, the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus still feature dual 12MP rear sensors and a single front 12MP sensor. But, the main 12MP camera now has larger sensors and faster apertures. It now has an f/1.5 aperture, 1.9µm pixels, and sensor-shift OIS. The 12MM front camera now also has support for Autofocus.
In video mode, there is the ACTION MODE feature that Apple said makes the use of the gimbal obsolete. The new PHOTONIC ENGINE uses deep fusion to combine multiple frames into one image. This results in brighter and sharper photos. One can safely say that the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus are using camera sensors and have similar camera features to the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max from last year.
The price of the iPhone 14 starts at $799 while the price of the iPhone 14 Plus starts at $899. Apple says you can get up to $800 off the price of iPhone 14 Plus when you trade in an eligible old iPhone.
Apple iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max
The iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max also have 6.1-inches and 6.7-inches displays. The difference between the display of the PRO models over the non-PRO models is that the PRO Models have support for a 120Hz refresh rate. Apple also ditched its signature notch and used the company called the Dynamic Island punch hole for the Apple iPhone 14 and 14 Pro Max. The Dynamic Island is like a dual punch hole on the top of the screen but this punch hole can expand and show different notifications including when you minimize an app.
This is not the first time a punch hole is used in a phone but Apple is the only company to customize the area around a punch hole to be able to receive call notifications, show charging notifications, when a phone is silent, etc. Aside from the impressive Dynamic Island display feature, Apple says the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max have 1600 nits brightness and can get up to 2000 nit in extreme conditions. This will be the brightest screen yet in a smartphone.
Apple also featured the brand new Apple A16 Bionic chipset with 6 cores CPU and 5 cores GPU. The A16 Bionic is built on a 4nm process technology and has up to 17 billion transistors (the most in any A Bionic chipset yet). According to Apple, the 6-core CPU is about 40% better than the competition (Android CPUs) and the A16 Bionic is more power efficient. Another area where Apple stepped things up is the camera of the iPhone 14 Pros.
The iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max features a new 48MP main sensor with quad pixel sensors. This is joined with a 2x 12MP telephoto lens, a 12MP ultra-wide lens, and a 12MP front camera. The new 48MP main camera is said to offer 2x better low-light photos. Features such as Sensor shift stabilization, ACTION MODE, PRORES, and Cinematic mode are all available.
The price of the iPhone 14 Pro starts at $999 while the price of the iPhone 14 Pro Max starts at $1099. Apple said you can get up to $1000 off the price when you trade in an eligible iPhone. Pre-order for the iPhone 14 Pros will start on September 9th and it’ll be available on September 16th.
Apple iPhone 14 Models Important and Useful Features
There are three important and useful features that are available in all iPhone 14 Models.
1. Emergency SOS via Satellite
This new connectivity feature will allow iPhone 14 users to connect to any available satellite and send texts in areas without cell towers. The component is built into the iPhone 14 models and it’ll work when the iPhone is pointed toward a satellite. The iPhone will also be able to direct you to point your iPhone 14 in the direction of a moving satellite to get enough signals to send texts during emergency situations.
Apple has also included a short message algorithm to allow users to send short messages in less than 15 seconds. Common emergency messages and responses are also included to save users time typing and sending such emergency-related messages. Apple has also set up relay centers that will help users call emergency services on their behalf. This feature will be available in the US and Canada on all iPhone 14 models from November and will be free for the first two months.
2. Crash Detection
All iPhone 14 models will also support crash detection features. With the crash detection feature, the iPhone 14 will be able to contact emergency services when there is a car crash. Apple said it has tested this feature on passenger cars, SUVs, and trucks.
3. eSIM Connectivity
All the iPhone 14 models that will be launched in the US this year will not have space for a physical SIM card. The iPhone 14 models will only support eSIM and this means users can add more than one eSIM. Apple said this is also safer as no one will be able to access your SIM card contact when your iPhone is lost. But, something tells us it’s also a way for the company to save cost in the production of the iPhone 14.
The Apple iPhone 14 models might not have all the features users expect but the new features introduced are not only important but also useful. For Apple to keep the price of the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus within the same price tag as last year, the company opted to use the old A15 bionic chip and old camera sensors. But overall, the iPhone 14 models will still be the best-performing and power-efficient smartphones of 2022.
