Why is a piece of technology that is meant to ease human suffering seem so controversial?

Well, throughout history, a new change that is comfortable for some people also causes discomfort to others. ChatGPT Chatbot is no exception as it’s a technology that changes the way we have been doing online searches for decades. What is ChatGPT Chatbot?

ChatGPT is an AI Chatbot that gives you instant answers to questions you ask. It’s a dialogue Chatbot where it seems you ask questions and get feedback as if you’re chatting with a human. How does ChatGPT work?

Think about using Google or Bing search. You visit the Search engine (Google or Bing), type in your query or search term, and the search engine recommends lots of websites with links to articles that answer your query. This is what we’ve been used to for the past decades (see diagram below). ChatGPT however, is changing how that works.

With ChatGPT the search process is pretty much the same but the outcome is different. Like search engines, you go to the ChatGPT Chatbot and type in your query or search term but unlike search engines, the Chatbot gives you the exact answer to your query instead of a list of recommended websites. Also, the Chatbot can also continue the conversation by picking up from the previous search query and giving you more information (see diagram below).

So, searches made on the ChatGPT chatbot are not only faster but can also be continuous, unlike search engines. This is why people could use the chatbot to write programming codes, complete project work, etc.

Advantages of ChatGPT

There are lots of reasons why you should use the new chatbot from OpenAI. In fact, Microsft saw the huge potential of this chatbot and invested $10 billion in it. below are some of the reasons why you should use the ChatGPT chatbot:

• Gives you direct answers instead of recommending a list of website links
• The chatbot can continue conversations and pick up from your previous question
• Can be used to write programming codes
• Can be used to write complete projects
• Makes research easy as it gives you the exact information you need

Disadvantages of ChatGPT

While this chatbot is good, it still has its own limitations and some people might not like to use it for one of the following reasons:

• It’ll give users the same answers over and over again
• It’s still a new software and hence its data can not be completely relied on
• It does not support pictures and video yet which means data provided to users might not completely accurate
• Gives the lazy man vibe as most researchers will just copy and paste its answer instead of cross-checking if the data provided are accurate.
• Not great for those in SEO
• It encourages the act of just copying and pasting articles

What is the Future of ChatGPT

Technology is always evolving and I think with time more people will learn to accept and use chatbots like ChatGPT. We live in a digital age and this also means people need access to information faster and ChatGPT provides just that. Truth is, this chatbot will be developed over time and will become more and more acceptable to many.

Microsoft already saw the potential and is trying to integrate this AI chatbot in its Bing and Yahoo search engines. This move has forced Google to also start testing its own Google Bard AI.

The ChatGPT Chatbot might not be accepted by many but it makes research work easy and in the future, it might be an important part of how we use search engines. As the chatbot becomes more efficient and reliable, the controversies surrounding it will start to decline and more people will start to accept it. But for now, just know that ChatGPT is not perfect but it’s a tool you should have.
