Dimensity 9200 vs Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1: Over the years, MediaTek has gradually climbed up the flagship chipset ladder to become one of the direct competitors to Qualcomm. MediaTek has launched its chipset that will be used in 2023 flagship phones but how does it compare to the flagship chipset from Qualcomm? Well, let’s find out.

When the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset was released by Qualcomm, it was and still is one of the best chipsets in a 2022 phone. However, now that MediaTek has launched the Dimensity 9200, it makes users wonder if it’s better to buy a phone powered by the new MediaTek chipset. So, in this Dimensity 9200 vs Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 article, I’ll be comparing the specs of both chipsets and in the end, you’ll know which is better and why.

Process Technology & Power Management

The MediaTek Dimensity 9200 and Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipsets are built on a 4nm process technology. However, the Dimensity 9200 is built on TSMC’s 2nd generation 4nm process technology which promises to be more power efficient. The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 on the other hand is built on TSMC’s 1st generation 4nm process technology. Since the Dimensity 9200 is using the 2nd generation of this technology, it is more power efficient and MediaTek has also included a new heat dissipation technique in the chipset.

According to MediaTek, the Dimensity 9200 is about 20x more power efficient than its predecessor the Dimensity 9000. If this is anything to go by, this means the Dimesity 9200 is more power efficient than the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. To be clear, the Qualcomm chipset is a power-efficient chipset but the new MediaTek chipset is better at power efficiency.

What the above means is that smartphones powered by both chipsets can perform consistently without getting heated up easily. But, because the Dimensity 9200 chipset has better power efficiency, phones powered by the chipset will not drop framerates as quickly as the phones that are powered by the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1.

The Dimensity 9200 and Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 feature Octa-core processors. But, both chipsets have different CPU cores and speeds. The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 has one performance core (1x Cortex-X2) with a CPU speed of 3.2GHz, three prime cores (3x Cortex-A710) with a CPU speed of 2.75GHz, and four efficiency cores (4x Cortex-A510) with a CPU speed of 2.00GHz. In comparison, the MediaTek Dimensity 9200 has one performance core (1x Cortex-X3) with a CPU speed of 3.05GHz, three prime cores (3x Cortex-A715) with a CPU speed of 2.85GHz, and four efficiency cores (4x Cortex-A510) with a CPU speed of 1.80GHz.

From comparing the CPU cores of both chipsets, you can see that the Dimensity 9200 has newer and faster CPU cores. As you can see from the table above, the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 features the older Cortex X2 performance core while the Dimensity 9200 features the newer Cortex X3 performance core. The same is also true for the prime cores on both chipsets.

The importance of the newer CPU cores in the Dimensity 9200 cannot be over-emphasized. It gives the MediaTek chipset an edge here and allows it to perform better than the Qualcomm chipset when processing data. And this is also evident from Geekbench and AnTuTu results of both chipsets (see the table below).

Dimensity 9200 vs Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1: GPU & AI

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 features the Adreno 730 GPU while the MediaTek Dimensity 9200 features the ARM Immortalis-G715 GPU. In the areas of graphics rendering, the ARM Immortalis-G715 GPU of the Dimensity 9200 beats the Adreno 730 GPU of the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. Although the GPU of the Snapdragon chipset can render graphics quickly, rendering graphics is faster using the GPU of the Dimensity chipset.

When it comes to AI, both chipsets are really impressive. Features such as live translation, voice commands, virtual payment, and more are all available in both chipsets. So, phones powered by both chipsets have access to lots of AI features that can be implemented by the OEMs and make the phones proper smartphones.

However, the Dimensity 9200 features a new 6th Gen APU (APU 690) AI machine. Amongst other things, the new 6th Gen APU (APU 690) brings Ray Tracing and if OEMs are serious, they can take advantage of this feature and improve the gaming experience of phones powered by the MediaTek chipset.

As good as all these AI features sound, not all will be available for use in most phones powered by these chipsets. This is because most OEMs won’t be implementing these features but phones powered by either chipset will have basic and some advanced AI functionalities.

Dimensity 9200 vs Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1: ISP

The Image Signal Processing (ISP) on the Dimensity 9200 is the Imagiq 890 while that of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 is the Qualcomm Spectra. The TPU in the Tensor G2 is Google’s custom next-generation Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) and it brings some significant improvements over its predecessor and some really impressive automation.

The ISP on both chipsets supports up to 200MP camera sensors. Both ISPs allow devices to record videos in RAW format and support Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10, 8K video recording, etc. The Imagiq 890 and Qualcomm Spectra are very impressive ISP. They can capture and stream HDR videos using multiple cameras at once and can capture steady videos in 8K resolution. But only the Imagiq 890 comes with RGBW sensor native support.

The Qualcomm Spectra and Imagiq 890 offer some really impressive features and can take and process high-quality photos and videos. The advantage of the Imagiq 890 is the increased shutter speed and its support for the RGBW sensor.

Dimensity 9200 vs Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1: Connectivity

The connectivity options available on both chipsets are very similar. Both chipsets support 5G connectivity and feature the same 5G MODEM inside. The 5G MODEM on both chipsets is Qualcomm’s X65 MODEM which is a very capable MODEM. This is why both chipsets have similar peak download and peak upload speeds.

Other connectivity options available on both chipsets are NFC, Bluetooth 5.3, GPS, Ultra Wideband (UWB) support, an online payment system, Wi-Fi 6E, Wi-Fi 7, Sub 6 GHz 5G, mmWave 5G, Radio, etc.

Dimensity 9200 vs Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1: Verdict

The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 is a very good chipset but the Dimensity 9200 chipset is better. This is because the Dimensity 9200 brings some extra features that are upgrades of what is already in the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1.

For example, the Dimensity 9200 has newer CPU cores, a GPU that now supports Ray Tracing, an ISP that supports RGBW sensor, it now has LPDDR5 and UFS 4.0, and is built on the more efficient 2nd generation 4nm process technology. So, anything the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip can do, the Dimensity 9200 can do better.

This Dimensity 9200 vs Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 specs comparison has shown that playing games and transferring data in phones powered by the Dimensity chipset is better and faster. So, you should consider buying a phone powered by the Dimesity 9200 but if you see a well-discounted Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 phone, you should buy it.
