Huawei might no longer be very popular in the US, the UK, and other European countries but in China, the company is still a big giant. A report from IDC detailing the Chinese foldable market in 2022 shows that Huawei is way ahead of Samsung in China.

According to the report, Huawei sold about 47.4 percent of the total foldable phones in China in Q4 2022. This is about a 118% increase from the number of foldable phones sold by the company in Q4 2021. This makes sense as the report confirmed that the foldable market in China grew from 0.5% in 2021 to 1.2% in 202. This means more people bought foldable phones in China in 2022.

Huawei was able to ship over 3 million units of its foldable phones in Q4 2022 and no other company came even close to this number in China (not even Samsung). This is not so surprising because Huawei made different models of foldable phones in 2022. The company sold the Pocket S, Mate Xs 2, the P50 Pocket, and even the Mate X2.

While Huawei was enjoying 47.4% of the foldable market in China, Samsung was able to get 16.5% of the foldable market share in China. This is still way less than what Huawei sold. However, note that Samsung only launches its foldable phones once a year. The Galaxy Z Flip 3, Galaxy Z Fold 3, Galaxy Z Flip 4, and Galaxy Z Fold 4 are among the company’s bestselling foldable phones in China.

OPPO on the other hand scope the third position beating Vivo, Xiaomi, and Honor to claim this spot. This company only made one foldable phone “the OPPO Find N” in 2022 but still managed to get a 13.8% foldable market share in China. Now that OPPO has launched the OPPO Find N2 and OPPO Find N2 Flip, its percentage share in the Chinese foldable market is sure to increase.

The reason why Huawei and Samsung topped this list was that these two companies made both clamshell foldable phones and notebook-style folding phones. If Huawei is able to beat Samsung in the foldable phone space in China, do you think other brands will be able to do the same if they launch their foldable phones outside China?
