Although both foldable phones are made by two different companies, the Mate X5 has some specs that are also available in the Galaxy Z Fold 5.
For example, both phones have a foldable screen that is an OLED panel and supports a 120Hz refresh rate. They also have a similar no-gap hinge mechanism which allows the screen of both phones to be wholly folded without gaps.

The difference between the Mate X5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5 starts from their designs. While the Mate X5 has a rear circular camera module, the Z Fold 5 has a simple rear camera module. But that’s just the start of the many differences.

The performance of the Huawei Mate X5 is powered by the Kirin 9000S chipset while that of the Galaxy Z Fold 5 is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset. Both chipsets support 5G network connectivity however, the chipset in the Z Fold 5 offers better performance.
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip in the Z Fold 5 features the Adreno 740 GPU which is a more powerful GPU than the Maleoon 910 GPU in the Kirin 9000S chip of the Mate X5. So, when it comes to gaming and graphics rendering, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 is better than the Huawei Mate X5.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 clearly has the advantage of popular software (i.e. Android 13), a better chipset, and is available for purchase in more regions. However, the Huawei Mate X5 offers some really impressive subtle perks like a microSD card slot, a bigger battery, and a faster charging system, while also offering features like water/dustproof and stylus support.
There’s been this stigma on Huawei phones outside China which is why I’ll recommend users outside China to buy the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 ahead of the Huawei Mate X5. However, if you’re comfortable using a Huawei smartphone, then you should consider buying the Huawei Mate X5.
