Display

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 has a smaller display when unfolded from its clamshell form. A 6.7-inch FHD+ OLED display with 120 Hz refresh rate support. However, the most amazing thing about the Galaxy Z Flip 3 is the IPX8 water-resistant rating it got. Making the Galaxy Z Flip 3 to be the first and only clamshell foldable device that is water-resistant.

In comparison, Huawei P50 Pocket has a bigger display than the Galaxy Z Flip 3. When unfolded, the Huawei P50 Pocket’s screen is a 6.9-inch FHD+ OLED display with 120 Hz refresh rate support. The big display is an advantage to the P50 Pocket because it is good for movie watching and video calls.

However, overall, the Huawei P50 Pocket screen is bigger and heavier but its durability is poor. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 is more durable because it is water-resistant which means you can take it to a pool/beach without having the fear of liquid penetration.

Camera

When it comes to the camera, the Huawei P50 Pocket is more sophisticated. It packs a triple rear camera system which includes: a 40MP main camera alongside a 13MP ultrawide snapper and a 32MP spectrum camera which should boost color rendering. The front-facing camera is 10.7 MP. Both the rear and the front-facing cameras can record video in 4K resolution.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 on the other hand brings a dual camera set-up. A 12MP OIS main camera and 12MP ultrawide lens. While upfront, it has a 10MP selfie camera. Also, the rear and selfie cameras can record video in 4K resolution.

Performance | Storage | RAM | 5G

The performance of both devices is at per. Both are powered by the Snapdragon 888 chipset. However, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 is the only device here with 5G connectivity, while Huawei P50 Pocket is restricted to only a 4G network because of the US ban.

When it comes to storage capacity and RAM size, the Huawei P50 Pocket has 8/12 GB RAM and 256/512 GB storage with additional space for microSD available. While Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 is available only in 8GB RAM and 128 GB or 256 GB storage configuration. Galaxy Z Flip 3 has no space for a microSD card. Overall, if not for the 5G unavailability on the Huawei P50 Pocket, it would have been a sweet clamshell device.

Software

One more additional thing to consider before deciding on which to purchase is the software experience. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 runs Android 11 out of the box with an upgrade to Android 12 in place. However, due to the US ban, Huawei could only use its in-house developing software HarmonyOS v2 which is rarely useful outside China.

Battery

Huawei P50 Pocket vs Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3: Verdict

Huawei P50 Pocket vs Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3

These two clamshell foldable devices are impressive but for those living outside China, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 is a better deal. It is the only one out of these two foldable devices to support 5G connectivity, is water-resistant, and even offers a better software experience. And is well cheaper than the Huawei P50 Pocket.

So if I’m to score both foldable smartphones by percentage. I’ll score the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 (60%) while the Huawei P50 Pocket gets (40%).
