MediaTek Dimensity 900 : MediaTek has introduced a new chipset targeted at mid-range smartphones. The upcoming MediaTek MT6877 chipset (Dimensity 900) is not as powerful as Dimensity 1200 or 1100 but it has impressed with its benchmark scores.
This new chipset from the Taiwanese company has a slightly higher score than the Snapdragon 768G by Qualcomm.
We must say that while MediaTek top flagship chipset is not as impressive as those from Qualcomm, MediaTek has gained ground in the mid-range chipset segment.
Dimensity 900 and Snapdragon 768G AnTuTu benchmark scores
According to tipster Digital Chat Station, the MediaTek Dimensity 900 scores around 480,000 on the AnTuTu benchmark. While the overclocked Snapdragon 768G chipset scores around 440,000 on same AnTuTu benchmark.
While the Dimensity 900 beats the Snapdragon 768G, it however falls behind the Snapdragon 780G. SD 780G which is built on 5nm chipset scores 540,000 in same AnTuTu benchmark.
This means it’ll be more expensive too (Qualcomm chipsets are more expensive than those from MediaTek).
The new Dimensity 900 chipset is expected to be the upgrade of the Dimensity 820. And it will be targeted at mid-range smartphones. Which means the phones that will be powered by the SoC will be very affordable.
Mid-range 5G Chipsets
And if this means more affordable 5G phones will be available 2021 onwards. So, MediaTek now has a handful of 5G chipsets including ones for flagship devices, premium mid-range smartphones, and budge mid-range phones.
Recent report from IDC indicates that MediaTek is focusing on the budget and mid-range segments. And this has started bearing fruits as they have bigger market share in Q3 2020 compared to Qualcomm. However, Qualcomm still leads the global smartphone AP market when it comes to revenue share.
The major reason why MediaTek has enjoyed bigger market share than its US counterpart is due to its mid-range segments 5G chipsets. They’re all affordable and more companies used them over last year. This is a trend the Taiwanese company hope to continue in 2021.
