Display, Design, and Durability

The design of the Nothing Phone 1 is unique. It has a transparent back design with 900 mini LED bulbs that light up. It completely stands out from the rest of the mid-range phones in the market. While the Samsung Galaxy A53 has a familiar design. The back cover is plastic and it has no catchy element like the Nothing Phone 1.

But display quality is one area where the Samsung Galaxy A53 tried to catch up with Nothing Phone 1. The screen sizes are the same – 6.5” FHD+ 120Hz Super AMOLED with brightness above 600 nits. And interestingly, the displays are protected with a Corning Gorilla Glass 5. However, the Galaxy A53 is the only device here with IP67 water and dust resistance.

Thus, for those who like to be different or stand out from the crowd, the design of the Nothing Phone 1 is what can give you that vibe and nothing else for now.

Camera

Nothing Phone 1 has dual rear cameras consisting of a 50MP OIS main cam and a 50MP ultra-wide lens. While upfront is a 16MP selfie camera. The rear camera can record video in 4K but the front is capped at 1080p. But how does it compare to Samsung Galaxy A53 with quad-rear cameras? The Galaxy A53 has a 64MP OIS main cam, alongside a 12MP main camera, a 5MP macro, and a 5MP depth sensor. While upfront is a 32MP selfie camera. With the Galaxy A53, the front and rear cameras can record video in 4K.

The primary rear cameras on both phones can take crisp and high-quality images in good lighting conditions and low-light areas. When it comes to ultra-wide comparison, the Nothing Phone 1 was better with better quality and sharpness. But the Samsung Galaxy A53 gives a better selfie.

Overall, I’m so impressed with what Nothing Phone 1 brings on the camera aspect. The quality and night photos are awesome for a midrange of its kind.

Performance | 5G | Configuration

Nothing choice of chipset for the Phone 1 gave it an edge over the Samsung Galaxy A53 in terms of performance. Simply put, the Nothing Phone has a better performance. It is powered by a Snapdragon 778G+ 5G chipset paired with 8/12 GB RAM and 128/256 GB storage. There’s no room for an Sd card.

Samsung uses the Exynos 1280 5G chipset to power the Galaxy A53. That chip is decent and not spectacular in performance compared to the mighty Snapdragon 778G+ chip on Nothing Phone 1. The Samsung Galaxy A53 does come in 6/8 GB RAM and 128/256 GB storage. However, unlike the Nothing Phone 1, you can expand the Galaxy A53 storage via a micro SD card.

Software

Let’s take a moment to talk about the Nothing OS. This is the company’s first skin software and it is based on Android 12. It is interesting to also know that Nothing has promised three years of software upgrades and four years of security patches once in two months. According to Nothing, its OS will not have bloatware (free of pre-installed apps). And you remember the 900 mini LED lights on the back of the Nothing phone 1? You can tweak those lights to match your ringing tone or notifications. That sounds fun, right?

The Samsung One UI 4 is not as fun as the Nothing OS. But to compensate, Samsung promised the Galaxy A53 four years of software upgrades and five years of security patches. Overall, both phones are well-to-do when it comes to the software but I’ll choose the Nothing OS over anything OS right now.

While the Samsung Galaxy A53 has a 5,000 mAh battery size with a 25W fast charge support but no wireless. The Nothing Phone 1 lead once again with the wireless system available. The phone can also offer reverse charging for your earbuds or smartwatch.
