Nubia Red Magic 7S Pro Review: Display, Design, and Durability
The Nubia Red Magic 7S Pro looks really good for a gaming smartphone. Gone are the days when the designs of gaming phones look very different from regular phones. The design looks very neat and simple with an under-display camera that allows you to have the whole front screen to yourself. For a gaming phone, the bezels and chin of the Red Magic 7S Pro are really slim.
It also has a two-tone finish on the rear with an Aviation aluminum middle frame and a glass back panel surrounding the Aviation aluminum middle frame. The front display is a 6.8-inches AMOLED panel with support for a 120Hz refresh rate with an 87.1% screen-to-body ratio (in comparison, the Rog Phone 6 Pro has an 82.2% screen-to-body ratio).
Nubia Red Magic 7S Pro is made of a Glass front, glass back, and an aluminum frame. All these are very solid and durable materials. But, this device is not water and dustproof, and this means it can be damaged by water and/or dust penetration (so keep away from these two things).
There are two gaming shoulders on the frame of the Red Magic 7S Pro. These are pressure-sensitive zones with a 520Hz touch-sensing. And aside from these, there are other interesting gaming features and I’ll talk about those in the gaming feature section below.
The display resolution of the Red Magic 7S Pro is FHD+ with 1080 x 2400 pixels and is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass. Red Magic 7S Pro looks really beautiful with its beautiful design and under-display camera. But, there is even more about this device and this Nubia Red Magic 7S Pro review takes us to the chipset.

Nubia Red Magic 7S Pro Review: Chipset and Performance
Performance is what separates gaming phones from other regular phones. On every test (such as Geekbench and AnTuTu), gaming phones always perform better than regular phones using the same chipset. This is because even though gaming phones use the same chipset as other phones, these phones are equipped with some of the most advanced cooling systems and paired with custom gaming chipsets. Well, the Nubia Red Magic 7S Pro is no different.
The Red Magic 7S Pro features the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset. This chipset (or SoC) is a 5G chipset that is built on TSMC’s 4nm process technology. It also has an octa-core processor with a speed clocked at 3.19GHz paired with the Adreno 730 GPU. Assisting this chipset is the Red Code 1 dedicated gaming chipset from ZTE/Nubia. The Red Code 1 dedicated gaming chipset focuses on processing things like Audio, RGB lighting, and haptics. This allows the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip to focus on processing other important things.

ZTE/Nubia used the Red Code chipset to take away some processing load from the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset. Now, the performance. The performance of the Nubia Red Magic 7S Pro is one of the best in the market. It crushes every single test score and sets a new high score. It’s also very impressive when it comes to real-life use. For example, when playing Genshin Impact on this phone using the highest graphics settings, it maintains an average of 60FPS easily and without any lags.
The shoulder buttons are fast and there are a lot of gaming features to turn on or off. So far from our testing, there has been no mobile game that could make the Nubia Red Magic 7S Pro lag. And one of the main reasons why the Red Magic 7S Pro performs so well is thanks to its efficient cooling system (more on this in the gaming feature section below).
Nubia Red Magic 7S Pro Review: Geekbench and AnTuTu scores
Tests | Results |
AnTuTu | 1097542 |
GB Single Score | 1334 |
GB Multi Score | 4168 |
Wide Life Extreme | 2810 at 16.8FPS |
Nubia Red Magic 7S Pro Review: Gaming Features
The gaming features of the Red Magic 7S Pro include its cooling mechanism. But before I tell you about its incredible cooling features, let’s talk about its other gaming features first. As stated above, the phone comes with two shoulder trigger buttons on the frame. It also has a dedicated gaming slidder button on the left side of the frame. This gaming button will open the gaming software interface and give you quick access to all its settings.
As already noted, the Red Magic 7S Pro also comes with a dedicated Red Code 1 gaming chip that assists the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. But things get really interesting with the cooling system of this device. The Nubia Red Magic 7S Pro features an “Internal Fan” and an “In-take Air Duct” on the left and right sides of the phone. The Air Duct sucks in air to cool the phone down while the Internal Fan blows out the heat via the “Exhaust Fan Vent” on the left side of the frame.
The cooling features of the Red Magic 7S Pro are:
- An Ultra-light nano-centrifugal fan
- A cooling canyon air duct
- A superconducting copper foil,
- Thermal gel, graphene, VC heat sink,
- And other combinations of 9-layer three-dimensional multi-dimensional cooling systems.
All these cooling paired with dedicated Red Code 1 gaming chips makes it possible for the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 to perform at its optimum best and this is why it’s one of the best performing phones right now.

Nubia Red Magic 7S Pro Review: Camera
The primary camera of the Red Magic 7S Pro is a 64MP Sony IMX686 sensor. This is supported by an 8MP ultra-wide lens, a 2MP macro lens, and a 16MP selfie camera. The primary camera can record videos in 8K resolution and looks pretty decent. The portrait mode is not bad it has decent edge detection and blurs the background a little.
The front camera is under the screen and is not the camera you might want to use for your selfies. The quality of photos and videos from the front camera is not good. The macro lens and ultra-wide lens are decent but not the best. Just a quick reminder that the Nubia Red Magic 7S Pro is actually a gaming phone and not a camera phone. That said, the only useful camera on this phone is the 64MP primary camera.
Nubia Red Magic 7S Pro: RAM, and Storage
The base model of the Nubia Red Magic 7S Pro comes with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. The highest model has 16GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage. There is no space for storage expansion via a microSD card slot, so you only have to make use of the internal storage. The RAM technology is LPDDR5 while the storage technology is UFS 3.1.

Nubia Red Magic 7S Pro Review: Battery, Software, and other features
A non-removable 5,000mAh battery powers the Nubia Red Magic 7S Pro and it has support for a 65W fast charge (Global version) while the China model has support for a 135W fast charge. It has a USB Type-C charging port at the bottom.
As per software, the Nubia Red Magic 7S Pro boots RedMagic OS 5.5 based on Android 12 out of the box. This device will get at least three years of major software updates. Other features include an under-display fingerprint scanner, 3.5mm headphone jack, Face Unlock, etc.
Nubia Red Magic 7S Pro Review: Price
The price of the Red Magic 7S Pro starts at $939 (for the back model with 12 + 256GB). The price of the silver model and transparent model with similar storage starts at $969. The 16GB + 512GB model is only available in Silver and Transparent colors and is sold for $1,099.
This makes the Nubia Red Magic 7S Pro an affordable premium gaming phone. To compare, the Rog Phone 6 Pro from Asus is sold for $1499 and that phone features the same chipset as the Red Magic 7S Pro. You can read this Red Magic 7S Pro vs Rog Phone 6 Pro comparison for more.

Nubia Red Magic 7S Pro Review: Conlusion
The Red Magic 7S Pro is one of the few premium gaming phones that you can buy under the $1000 mark. Other 2022 gaming phones with similar features are priced well above the $1000 mark.
Nubia Red Magic 7S Pro has good gaming features, incredible performance, a big battery, a beautiful design, an efficient cooling system, a colorful and fast display, and is reasonably priced. But, its camera experience is not great, it’s relatively heavy, and it has a very poor selfie camera. However, if you still can’t afford this gaming device but are looking for an even more affordable gaming phone, then check out the alternatives below.
