AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX vs Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090: Since the release of the Nvidia RTX 4090, it has become the best desktop graphics card on the market. It is powerful and delivers a beastly performance in whatever tasks. But with the arrival of AMD’s latest GPUs- Radeon RX 7900 XTX and 7900 XT, have things changed? Has the Nvidia RTX 4090 been dethroned from its number-one position? Let’s find out.
AMD officially announced the RDNA3 architecture GPUs on November 3. And the first GPUs to take advantage of the RDNA3 technology are the Radeon RX 7900 XTX and 7900 XT. They will battle the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 and 4080 GPUs respectively.
The Nvidia RTX 4090 is faster than the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX. AMD confirmed this during an interview after the launch event of the RX 7900 series. AMD’s Frank Azor (Chief Architect of Gaming Solutions & Marketing) said the RX 7900 XTX is to compete with RTX 4080 series and not the flagship 4090 card.
[Radeon RX 7900 XTX] is designed to go against 4080 and we don’t have benchmarks numbers on 4080. That’s the primary reason why you didnt see any NVIDIA compares. […] $999 card is not a 4090 competitor, which costs 60% more, this is a 4080 competitor.Frank Azor – AMD’s Chief Architect of Gaming Solutions & Marketing
Radeon RX 7900 XTX vs Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090: Price | Availability
The Nvidia RTX 4090 is more expensive with an MSRP of $1,500. While the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX has a starting price of $999. Both GPUs will add cost by the time they get to the market. But for now, the prices above are the MSRP and it clearly shows the Nvidia RTX 4090 is about 60% more.
In terms of their availability, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 is now available for purchase. You can use the box at the bottom of this post to buy it. AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX will join the market on December 13th.
Radeon RX 7900 XTX vs Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090: Specs | Performance
Due to the embargo, we are not permitted to post any benchmarks of the Radeon RX 7900 XTX yet until mid-December, however, just have it in mind that the Nvidia RTX 4090 is better. AMD’s Frank Azor (Chief Architect of Gaming Solutions & Marketing) has clearly stated that the Radeon RX 7900 XTX was made to compete with Nvidia RTX 4080 and not with the flagship 4090.
The Radeon RX 7900 XTX is the best-performing desktop GPU from AMD yet. This means it is better than the Radeon RX 6950 XT. AMD’s latest has a clock speed of 2.3 GHz, 96 Compute Units, and 24GB GDDR6 Memory. And one unique feature to talk about is the RDNA 3 architecture.
The RX 7900 XTX is one of the first GPUs in the world to have a chiplet-based design. This simply means the GPU die has dual components, the Graphics Compute Die (GCD) and the Memory Cache Die (MCD). The GCD is built on a new 5nm manufacturing process while the MCD uses the older 6nm process. You can read more about the RDNA3 architecture here.
AMD choosing not to use the latest TSMC 4N fab process helped them to cut costs. The TSMC 4N fab process is more expensive than the 5/6nm process. Which is an additional reason why the Nvidia RTX 4090 is more expensive because it is using the latest 4N.
Radeon RX 7900 XTX vs Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090: Memory Speed | Core Counts
Both GPUs have the same memory size of 24GB. But the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 uses a faster GDDR6X as opposed to the GDDR6 featured on AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX. The GDDR6X Memory type is faster but consumes more power too. Additionally, the Radeon RX 7900 XTX has 12,288 streaming processors while NVIDIA’s RTX 4090 has 16,384 CUDA cores.
Does the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX has a better 8K performance than the Nvidia RTX 4090? Arguably yes! AMD uses the faster DisplayPort 2.1 interface, while the Nvidia RTX 4090 featured DP1.4a. The former used by AMD should offer more bandwidth and will be useful when the new 8K monitors are announced in 2023.
Radeon RX 7900 XTX vs Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090: Conclusion
The Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 is faster than the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX. The Nvidia RTX 4090 continues to sit on the throne of the best graphics cards. However, the Radeon RX 7900 XTX is cheaper and offers a better cost per frame- the king of value.
