Tecno Phantom X2 Pro Review: A good phone you should Consider

Tecno Phantom X2 Pro Review: The Tecno Phantom X2 and X2 Pro are the best smartphones that Tecno Mobile has made yet. This smartphone is good and although the phone was launched at a high price in Dubai, the company reduced the price of the phone in Africa and Asia hence I recommend you take a second look at the phone.

Truth be told, the Phantom X2 Pro is a very good phone and it comes with a lot of new features that I have never seen in a Tecno smartphone. But, even the best phones also have their bad sides.

So, in this Tecno Phantom X2 Pro review, I’ll be sharing with you the good and bad sides of this phone. In the end, you will be able to decide if you should buy this phone or not. However, should you decide not to buy the Phantom X2 Pro, I’ve listed some really good alternatives for the phone at the end of this phone.

Tecno Phantom X2 Pro Review: Display, Design, and Durability

The display of the Tecno Phantom X2 Pro is 6.8 inches and it is an AMOLED panel, FHD+ 1080 x 2400 pixels resolution, and supports a 120Hz refresh rate. The front screen is slightly curved on both sides and has a punch hole on the top that houses the selfie camera. The peak brightness of the display is 500 nits and is protected by Gorilla Glass Victus.

Phantom X2 Pro display

The phone is made of Glass front (Gorilla Glass Victus), aluminum frame, and plastic back. Gorilla Glas Victus is one of the toughest glasses in the smartphone industry. So, the display of the Phantom X2 Pro is well protected. The rear design of the phone brings mixed reactions though.

On the rear, the phone has this camera module placed in the top center. This camera module has two big camera sensors that look really ugly when you see them in photos. But when you hold the phone up close or wear a protective case on the phone, the camera module is not that bad.

Tecno Phantom X2 Pro Review

Overall, the design of the phone is subject to user preference but the display and durability of the Phantom X2 Pro do not meet the standard of the industry. The display of the phone is just 500 nit which is not bright at all, especially under direct sunlight. Then the phone is not certified to be water and dustproof which means it’s not very durable.

Tecno Phantom X2 Pro Review: Chipset and Performance

The chipset inside the Tecno Phamton X2 Pro is the MediaTek Dimensity 9000 5G chipset. This is a flagship chipset from MediaTek that was released in late 2021. This chipset is a very high-performing chipset with fast CPU cores, a powerful GPU, a nice ISP, and a very impressive AI engine.

Compared to the chipset in the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, this chipset is a great performer. So, when it comes to playing graphics-intensive games and rendering graphics, the Phantom X2 Pro is up to any task. Performance is not an issue for this phone as it can play games using the highest graphics settings.

In fact, performance is one of the major selling points of this phone. During my time using this phone, I experienced no lag or hanging. The phone opens apps very fast and switching between apps is smooth and also fast. Using the Dimensity 9000 chipset in the Phantom X2 Pro is a huge jump in performance when you compare the chipset of the previously released Tecno Phantom X.

Tecno Phantom X2 Pro Review: Camera

The camera is another area where Tecno made major improvements in the Phantom X2 Pro. The cameras of the Phantom X2 Pro have bigger camera sensors and apertures than the cameras of the Phantom X. The phone has a 50MP main camera, a 50MP portrait camera (retractable lens), a 13MP ultra-wide lens, and a 32MP front camera.

Phantom X2 Pro rear cameras

All the rear cameras have Auto Focus but none of them has an OIS stabilization feature which is very disappointing. The main camera is based on the Samsung s5kjnv sensor, which appears to be the ISOCELL GNV. This camera uses ISOCELL 3.0, has a 1/1.3″ size, 1.2µm pixels, and employs an RGBW arrangement.

The portrait camera is Samsung’s s5kjn1tele sensor, also known as the Samsung ISOCELL JN1. It uses ISOCELL 2.0 tech with Double Super PD autofocus. Its sensor size is 1/2.76″ with 0.64µm pixels. The 13MP ultrawide camera of the Phantom X2 Pro is based on a Samsung S5K3L6 sensor. It has a 1/3″ optical format and 1.12µm pixels.

The quality of photos from the 50MP main camera of the Phantom X2 Pro is sharp and it retains details. Even when taking night photos, the quality is very good. The colors look natural and the photos are not overly saturated. The quality is not the best we’ve seen in phones with a similar price tag, but photos from the Phantom X2 Pro are decent, to say the least.

The quality of photos from the 50MP portrait lens and 13MP ultra-wide lens is just average. Now, compared to the Phantom X, the photos from this phone are incredibly good but when compared to the competition, the photos are average.

Tecno Phantom X2 Pro Review: RAM, Storage, and Software

Tecno Phantom X2 Pro comes with 12GB of LPDDR4 RAM + 256GB of UFS 3.1 internal storage. It has no space for storage expansion via a microSD card slot. The Phantom X2 Pro boots HiOS 12 based on Android 12 software out of the box and it is certain to get two years of software updates.

Tecno Phantom X2 Pro Review

Since this is the Tecno Phantom X2 Pro review, there are two things wrong with the software update policy of this phone. One, the phone boots Android 12 software out of the box in an era when phones from other companies are booting Android 13 out of the box. Second, the phone should get at least three years of major software given its price tag.

Tecno Phantom X2 Pro Review: Battery & Other Features

Tecno Phantom X2 Pro is powered by a 5,160mAh battery with support for 45W wired fast charging. The battery can charge from 0 to 100% in about 55 minutes. A single charge of this battery can last you for more than 8 hours. There is no wireless charging and no reverse wired or wireless charging.

Tecno Phantom X2 Pro Review: Price

The price of the Tecno Phantom X2 Pro is $650 and it comes with 12GB RAM + 256GB storage. This is about N425,000 Naira in Nigeria. The regular Phantom X2 price is $550 which is about N375,000 Naira in Nigeria. The phone is quite expensive and as good as it is, I can recommend you consider buying it because I have seen and used other phones out there with better specs and are cheaper. The Tecno Phantom X2 Pro is no doubt a good phone. Tecno made some improvements like the flagship chipset, bigger camera sensors, and Gorilla Glass Victus protection.
