Xiaomi just over took Apple and become the world’s second largest smartphone company. But, from the growth it recorded in the second quarter of 2021, the company is gunning for the number one spot.

According to Canalys Research, Xiaomi recorded an impressive 83% increase in its shipments. Which means it might even overtake Samsung to become the world’s largest smartphone company if the trend continues.

Over the years, the number one and number two largest phone company’s spot has been shared by Samsung and Apple. Until Huawei came and caused an upset to overthrow Apple and became the second largest phone company.

Then the sanctions from the United States forced Huawei to withdraw and the race to take up the second spot became intense. So, Xiaomi have stepped up and with the record percentage growth, they might go all the way up to number one.

When it comes to global smartphone shipments, this is the first Xiaomi is entering the top two position. And this is mostly because Xiaomi has been focused on launching high-end premium smartphones with incredible specs at an affordable price.

From the Canalys Research, Samsung still retains the number one spot. Samsung is siting at the top spot with 19% share of smartphone shipments globally, Xiaomi come second with 17%, and Apple comes third with 14%. Both OPPO and Vivo are fourth and fifth with 10% market share each.

Canalys Research Manager, Ben Stanton says that the average selling price for Xiaomi is around 40% and 75% cheaper when compared to Samsung and Apple respectively. A typical example is the pricing of the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra.

Two things are up for speculations here: One, Xiaomi might just become the world’s largest smartphone company if this growth continues. Two, OPPO and Vivo might also step in and maybe push Apple further down the line and compete with Xiaomi for the number two spot.

Just like Xiaomi, OPPO and Vivo also make high-end premium smartphones at affordable prices. But, it seems OPPO and Vivo spends lots of money marketing their smartphones more.
