Major software updates has always been a major concerns for many Android users. Most Android phone makers gives just a year and at most two years of major software updates. Only Samsung and OnePlus gives more than two years of android OS updates.
Now, it seems Xiaomi is jumping into same boat as Samsung and OnePlus. Xiaomi has promised to give three years of Android OS updates to the incoming Xiaomi 11T series. Aside from three years of major OS updates, the company will also be giving 4 years of security patches.

With regards to new Xiaomi software update commitment, the company’s Head of Product & Technology, Albert Shan, said;
“With the continuous improvement made to smartphone hardware, the life cycle of a smartphone is gradually lengthening, meaning users aren’t required to replace their smartphones as frequently.
For this reason, more consumers place great importance on receiving the latest operating system updates, along with the latest features. Xiaomi is committed to providing users with industry-leading hardware and lasting performance.”
“In continuation of this commitment to users, Xiaomi is further extending the life cycle of Xiaomi’s smartphones by ensuring three generations of Android operating system updates.
This way, users can choose to use their current devices for a longer period, and enjoy the latest features along with it. At the same time, we will also provide users with security updates that ensure their devices operate securely for a longer period of time,” he added.
The company is yet to share its plans to extend this new software update commitment to other of its devices, but it’s currently evaluating that possibility.

Responding to a question asked about providing same level of software support to other phones, a spokesperson told XDA that “Xiaomi is currently evaluating the possibility of bringing the extended Android system and security upgrades services to more Xiaomi devices.”
Countries like Germany is trying to bring a law that mandate smartphone makers to bring 7 years of software updates. And with Xiaomi making an adjustment in its software support plans is pretty inline.
But Xiaomi is not the only Android phone maker that is offering three years of software updates. Samsung announced a change in its software plans when the company released the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 series. OnePlus is also bringing up to three years of software updates to its devices.
Xiaomi is set to officially reveal the Xiaomi 11T series on September 15th. Leaks of renders has shown us the design of the smartphones. And Xiaomi also confirmed that one of the phones in the series will support 120W fast charge.
