Samsung Exynos 2200 vs Apple A15 Bionic: Can the Exynos 2200 outperform the Apple A15 Bionic chipset? This comparison is tougher than expected because here we have the latest Samsung’s Exynos 2200 chip battling the best in the industry- A15 bionic.
In some regions, the forthcoming Samsung Galaxy S22 series will be powered by the Exynos 2200 chipset. While Apple’s A15 Bionic chipset powers the iPhone 13 Pro models. Below is the full comparison.
Samsung Exynos 2200 vs Apple A15 Bionic: Process Technology
Exynos 2200 chipset is manufactured on Samsung’s 4nm EUV and developed on ARM’s latest v9 CPU architecture. In contrast, A15 Bionic is built on a 5nm node by TSMC. The A15 Bionic fabrication process is one generation behind the Exynos 2200s 4nm node. But let’s see how the fabrication process affects the performance of these SoCs.

CPU
Samsung Exynos 2200 has 8 CPU cores with a 1+3+4 cluster design. While Apple A15 Bionic chip brings 6 CPU cores with a 2+4 cluster design. But does the 8 cores of the Exynos 2200 outperforms the A15 Bionic’s 6 CPU cores? Not necessarily, because the A15 Bionic with Hexa-core is faster.
Exynos 2200 vs Apple A15 Bionic Performance and Efficiency Cores
Cores | Exynos 2200 | A15 Bionic |
Performance | 1x Cortex-X2 3x Cortex-A710 | 2x @ 3.2GHz Avalanche |
Efficiency | 4x Cortex-A510 | 4x @2.85GHz Blizzard |
Exynos 2200 vs Apple A15 Bionic Geekbench
In real life test on Geekbench v5, the Apple A15 Bionic beats the Exynos 2200 on total scores.
Geekbench | Exynos 2200 | A15 Bionic |
Multi-Core | 3516 | 4849 |
Singe-Core | 1108 | 1748 |
GPU
The Exynos 2200 has a powerful GPU if we should go by the graphics design. Samsung Exynos 2200 GPU is called Xclipse 920 and it has similar AMD RDNA2 architecture that powers Sony Playstation 5 and Microsoft Xbox series consoles.
Samsung’s Xclipse 920 GPU supports ray-tracing and VRS (Variable Rate Shading). But can Samsung keep things cool with this workforce GPU? This is a concern because initially the Xclipse 920 struggled with a thermal performance at its intended 1.9GHz clock speed.
In comparison, the Apple A15 Bionic’s GPU has 5 cores with a peak frequency of up to 1200MHz. When it comes to graphics rendering, the new Apple GPU is top-notch and it does so while consuming less battery life.
Overall both graphics processing units are good but the Apple A15 Bionic 5 cores GPU seems to be cooler in performance, while the Xclipse 920 GPU struggles with thermal performance sometimes.

Camera | Machine Learning | Connectivity
Samsung Exynos 2200 supports up to 200MP single camera sensors. And can capture 108MP images with zero shutter lag. It can as well record video in 8k resolution.
On the other hand, the image signal processor (ISP) of the Apple A15 Bionic has limitations. For instance, it can’t record in 8K HDR. The max resolution for the A15 Bionic to record is 4K HDR Dolby Vision videos at 60FPS, and it can also handle ProRes RAW footage at 4K 30FPS.
