There are lots of activities that goes on in your Android Phone even when you perform the smallest and what you might see as the easiest of tasks. All this operation is handled by a small but powerful chip in your Android phone known as the “Mobile Platform” (also known as the System on Chips (SOCs)). And the Snapdragon 765 and Snapdragon 765G is one of the latest Mobile Platform released by Qualcomm in December 2019 targeted at mid-range phones.

It is important to note that there are other network companies that produce Mobile Platforms (SOCs). The likes of MediaTek, Samsung, Huawei all produce System on chips like Qualcomm. However, this article is about the Snapdragon 765 and Snapdragon 765G produced by Qualcomm and what the release of this chip/mobile platform means for android phone users 2020 and beyond.

Quick Note: In this article, when you see the term SOCs, System on chips and/or Mobile Platform we are referring to the Snapdragon 765. The Snapdragon 765 is accompanied by a Snapdragon 765G which has more gaming capability. Since both SOCs have almost same features, we’ll be referring to both as Snapdragon 765 in this article (except specifically indicated). A summary of the difference between these two mobile platforms is made available below.

To begin let’s get you to understand what this new Mobile platform actually means and some of its key features. It is important to note that here at Tech Arena24, we focus more on users and we won’t be talking extensively in engineering terms. Instead we’ll be focusing on what the terms means for everyday Android phone users.

What is Snapdragon 765

Snapdragon 765 or Qualcomm Snapdragon 765 is an advance 5G and AI Mobile platform developed by Qualcomm company for mid-range phones (high end premium phones). The mobile platform was released in the Snapdragon summit held in Maui, Hawaii on December 3 2019. This new Mobile platform is an upgrade to the previous Snapdragon 730.

What is Snapdragon 765G

Snapdragon 765G or Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G is an advance 5G and AI Mobile platform developed by Qualcomm company for mid-range phones (high end premium phones). Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G is more gaming equipped compared with the 765. The mobile platform was released in the Snapdragon summit held in Maui, Hawaii on December 3 2019. This new Mobile platform is an upgrade to the previous Snapdragon 730G.

The new SOCs are indeed an upgrade of the Snapdragon 730 and Snapdragon 765G in every way. They have faster processing speed and more battery efficiency. Makes use of newer cortex processors and more powerful GPU. Below are some of the key specifications of the new Qualcomm SOCs.

Differences between Snapdragon 765 and Snapdragon 765G

There two major differences between the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765 and Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G is the CPU clock speed and GPU. While both chip (SOC or Mobile platform) make use of CPU technology, the Snapdragon 765 clock speed is at 2.3GHz while that of Snapdragon 765G is clocked at 2.4GHz.

Another difference between these two is the GPU. According to Qualcomm, the Adreno 620 GPU present in Snapdragon 765G provides 10% faster graphics rendering compared to the standard Snapdragon 765 for a stunning visual experience that brings gaming action to life.

The differences above makes the Snapdragon 765G a mobile platform designed for a gamer. It will render images better and process graphics and animation faster than the Snapdragon 765.

Key Specifications of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765 and Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G

  • 5G reaches peak performance: Up to 3.7Gbps download speed and 1.6Gbps upload speed.
  • More cameras, more capabilities: These mobile platforms boast the ability to capture 4K HDR video in over a billion shades of color. Plus, advanced AI and CV-ISP create intelligent multi-camera experiences that are smarter, quicker, and more robust.

Interesting Parts of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765 and Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G

There are some parts of this new Mobile platforms that we have singled out and want to tell you more about.

5G Chipset

The 5G chipset of that accompanies the new SOC is not integrated inside. It is external and by external we don’t mean it is connected via a USB cable. What it means is that, the 5G chipset is standalone chipset inside the android phone board. Qualcomm is using the Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ X52 Modem-RF together with the new SOC.

Since the 5G chipset will be placed together with the new SOC, it therefore means that any Android phone that uses the new SOC will be a 5G android phone. Keep in mind that currently, the 5G of the new SOC is not the fastest in the market. Its 5G boost of 3.7Gbps download speed and 1.6Gbps upload speed which is lower to the download and upload speed of the Snapdragon 865 5G Mobile platform.

The Adreno 620 GPU

The GPU of the SOC which is responsible for processing graphics and animation is Qualcomm® Adreno™ 620 GPU. According to Qualcomm, it faster than the Adreno 618 found in Snapdragon 730 and 730G by some 20% and it is more battery efficient.

While it might not likely be receiving driver update from Google PlayStore, it does have incredibly increased performance. And for a GPU in the league of mid-range phones, its definitely a very good GPU.

The CPU

In the CPU sector, Qualcomm also made some incredible changes. Let’s just skip all the engineering terms and tell you what they actually did. Qualcomm introduced new Cortex A76 at a clock speed of 2.3GHz for Snapdragon 765 and 2.4GHz for Snapdragon 765G. The previous Snapdragon 730 also used the Cortex A76 at a lower 2.2GHz frequency.

The only major difference in the clock speed is the increased GHz. And this should make it the new (Snapdragon 765/765G) platforms perform better than old mobile platforms (Snapdragon 730/730G)

5th Generation AI

We can write a whole article detailing the 5th generation AI present in the Snapdragon 765. But we won’t do that, what we’ll do is tell you the things you should expect when you eventually get a phone that makes use of the SOC. Note that we have not seen this 5th generation fully functional in any device, hence below are what we expect to see;

  1. You can use the phone to translate written text from one language to another. All you have to do is use the back camera to capture the texts and it will show you the meaning in the language you have selected.
  2. Translation from speech to text in a different language. Speak to the phone in one language and wait as it translates to written text in another language displayed in your screen.
  3. A phone using this SOC can also related and translate what is been said in your environment.
  4. Incredible phone assistant. You can wave your hands to next or previous a music etc.
  5. Multiple security features with a possible dual fingerprint sensor placed on the screen of the phone.
Image Signal Processor (ISP)

There is pretty nothing new in this section. By new, we mean there is no introduction of some new technology like the ones we see in the Snapdragon 865. But, the ISP of this new chip is very promising and it should perform better than most available out there.

According to Qualcomm, this chip will be able to shoot 4K HDR video in over a billion shades of color. Plus, advanced AI and CV-ISP create intelligent multi-camera experiences that are smarter, quicker, and more robust.
