Design and Display

These two smartphones have different designs. The Tecno Camon 18 has a dot in-display design, while the Samsung Galaxy A23 has a waterdrop notch design. They have big displays with plastic backs and plastic frames. More so, the panel on both phones is LCD.

There’s also a 90Hz refresh rate support on both smartphones. In a nutshell, the display on these two smartphones is the same. No significant difference.

Samsung Galaxy A23 camera is more versatile. It comes with a 50MP main cam, alongside a 5MP ultra-wide, a 2MP depth sensor, and a 2MP macro lens. Upfront is an 8MP selfie camera. While Tecno Camon 18 has a triple camera: 48MP main cam, 2MP depth sensor, and a 2MP macro lens. It has no ultra-wide lens which is where it falls behind the Galaxy A23.

Overall, the Tecno Camon 18 is a good camera phone, but the Galaxy A23 is better because of its versatility.

Performance | 5G

These two smartphones support 4G network only (no 5G available). And both have a 4GB RAM + 64GB storage configuration. As well as a 6GB RAM + 128GB storage configuration. However, the chipsets that power them are different. The Galaxy A23 is powered by Snapdragon 680 4G, while the Tecno Camon 18 is powered by MediaTek hello G88.

The two chipsets inside both devices are midrange level. And so far from our testing in the studio, both chips are at par. So the performances across both phones are alike.

Software

Tecno Camon 18 runs Android 11 out of the box. While Samsung A23 runs Android 12 from the box. So the Galaxy A23 is a year ahead of the Tecno Camon 18 in terms of software (And Samsung has promised up to 3 years of OS updates). So for a better software experience, we’ll recommend the Galaxy A23 over the Tecno Camon 18.

Battery

Both smartphones have a 5,000 mAh battery capacity. The Samsung Galaxy A23 comes with a 25W fast charge support, while the Tecno Camon 18 has an 18W fast charge.

The Tecno Camon 18 is cheaper. The 4GB RAM + 128 GB storage configuration is priced at 106,000 naira. A similar configuration of the Galaxy A23 will cost you 129,000 naira (the 4/64 GB model is 119,000 naira). The 6GB RAM variants of these two smartphones are more expensive. But overall, the Camon 18 is cheaper.

Tecno Camon 18 vs Samsung Galaxy A23: Verdict

The Samsung Galaxy A23 is the better phone of these two. It offers better value for money. It has a better software plan, better UI experience, and a versatile camera. However, one reason to consider the Tecno Camon 18 is because of its after-sales services. The Tecno Camon 18 is easier to repair as Carlcare repair centres are almost in every region where Transsion devices are being sold.

So if I’m to score these two smartphones by percentage. I’ll score the Samsung Galaxy A23 (54%) while the Tecno Camon 18 gets (46%)
