Google announces the Pixel 6a with Tensor chip, dual rear cameras, and more

Google has announced the Pixel 6a and it comes with the Tensor chip found in the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. It also features a display with an OLED panel, and dual rear cameras amongst other features. The starting price of the Google Pixel 6a is $449 and it’s expected to go on sale on July 21.

The display size of the Pixel 6a is 6.1-inch, the display panel is OLED, the display resolution is FHD+, and it has the standard 60Hz refresh rate. Design-wise, the Pixel 6a looks like the Pixel 6 smartphone and it also has the same aluminum frame.

But unlike the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, the Pixel 6a has IP67 (not the advanced IP68) and the front glass is no longer Gorilla Glass Victus but Gorilla Glass 3. This means the Pixel 6a has the same durability as the previously released Pixel 5a.

The Pixel 6a features the same Google Tensor chipset found inside the other Pixel 6 phones. It also has the Titan M2 security chip. The chipset is paired with 6GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 128GB of UFS 3.1 storage.

On the rear, there are dual rear cameras. A 12.2MP primary camera with dual-pixel and OIS features. The primary camera is supported by a 12MP ultra-wide lens. On the front, it has an 8MP camera for selfies. The camera will have support for an advanced Night Mode and Magic Eraser.

Other features include 5G connectivity, always-on display, in-display fingerprint sensor, stereo speakers, dual microphones, and HDR support. The phone comes with Android 12 out of the box with five years of security updates.

The Pixel 6a is powered by a 4410mAh battery with support for an 18W USB-PD fast charging but there is no wireless charging. According to Google, the battery can last over 24 hours of regular use and up to 72 hours with the new Extreme Battery Saver mode.  

The phone will be available in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore, Spain, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The Pixel 6a will be available in three colors: Chalk, Charcoal, and Sage. It will go on sale online on July 21 and will be in stores on July 28.
