Sony is getting set to release its next smartphone camera sensor and it’s expected to be called “Sony IMX800”. As a leading manufacturer of image sensors in the smartphone industry, this new Sony IMX800 is expected to set the pace for others to follow.
The new Sony IMX800 is expected to feature faster autofocus, improved low-light performance and better image stabilization performance. It is also expected the incoming Sony sensor will be inside smartphones in the second half of 2022. Xiaomi might be the first phone company to use this sensor inside its incoming Xiaomi 12 Ultra.
According to some reports, the optical format of the Sony IMX800 will be 1/1.1 inches and have a resolution of 50-megapixels. This will make it one of the largest sensors on the market; and is larger than the Samsung ISOCELL GN2 that Xiaomi used inside the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra.
Xiaomi 12 Ultra to feature the new Sony IMX800 sensor
The incoming Xiaomi 12 Ultra phone is expected to feature a QHD+ LTPO 2.0 OLED screen, a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ chip and a battery with 125W fast wired charging. Along with the 50MP Sony IMX800 sensor, the main camera setup might include three sensors and all with a resolution of 48MP. One of these cameras will be a periscope lens with 5x optical zoom.
Some renders of the Xiaomi 12 Ultra have surfaced on China’s Weibo website. The renders showed the phone with a circular camera module and are said to feature the soon to be released Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ chip from Qualcomm.
Ultra phones from Xiaomi have always been advertised as camera smartphones by the company. Hence it won’t be so surprising if the incoming Xiaomi 12 Ultra features the new Sony IMX800 sensor along with some other useful camera sensors.
