Display and Design

Both phones have a 6.1-inches display, AMOLED panel, FHD+ resolution, and HDR10+ support. But, the display of the Galaxy S22 is brighter and also has a 120Hz refresh rate. The last two features are not available in the iPhone 13.

The display of both phones is flat but the iPhone 13 has a bigger notch to house its dual selfie cameras while the Galaxy S22 has a punch hole for its single selfie camera. The Galaxy S22 also has thinner bezels.

When using both phones, it’s very difficult to fault the smoothness of the iPhone 13. You might not even notice it has no 120Hz refresh rate. However, the 120Hz refresh rate on the Galaxy S22 brings a different vibe when using its display. And this gives it an edge over the Apple iPhone.

Camera

Both Apple and Samsung are very good at making phones with good cameras. At the rear, the iPhone 13 has dual cameras: a 12MP main camera with the sensor-shift OIS, and a 12MP ultra-wide lens. And upfront it features a 12MP selfie camera and SL 3D, (depth/biometrics sensor).

The Galaxy S22 on the other hand has triple rear cameras: a 50MP main camera with OIS, a 10MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom, and a 12MP ultra-wide camera. And upfront it comes with a 10MP selfie camera.

It’s difficult to just pick one phone camera over the other here. This is because depending on the situation, you might prefer either camera. For example, the portrait camera of the Galaxy S22 is better at detecting edges. While the camera of the iPhone 13 is wider and most times better in night photography.

But, the camera of the Galaxy S22 offers more features. It has a 3x optical zoom and this is a feature not found in the iPhone 13. As for videography, the Galaxy S22 can shoot videos in 8K resolution but the iPhone 13 can shoot in only 4K resolution. However, shooting videos with the iPhone 13 seems to be more stable compared to using the Galaxy S22.

Overall, both phones provide really good quality photos and videos. But it comes to user preference here. Some might prefer the extra optical zoom and 8K resolution of the S22 while others will prefer the more stable and clear night photos of the iPhone 13.

Performance | Storage | RAM | 5G

Both phones are powered by different chipsets and this also means different performance. The chipset inside the Apple iPhone 13 is the A15 Bionic from Apple. While the chipset inside the Samsung Galaxy S22 is the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 from Qualcomm.

The A15 Bionic is currently the best performing chipset but the snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is not far behind. Playing games and doing heavy graphics-related work on both phones is very smooth.

These two smartphones have support for 5G network connectivity. The RAM inside the Galaxy S22 is 8GB with storage options are 128 and 256GB. The iPhone 13 on the other hand has 4GB of RAM with storage options ranging from 128-512GB.

It’s hard to separate these two smartphones based on performance.  This is because whatever one phone can do, the other can also execute effortlessly.

Software

The Samsung Galaxy S22 boots Android 12 out of the box. Samsung has promised 4 years of major software updates for its device. The iPhone 13 boots iOS 15 out of the box and will be getting up to 6 years of software updates from Apple.

Samsung is good at regular software updates but no smartphone maker can beat Apple in the software update game. So, you’ll get better software updates on the iPhone 13.

Battery

Galaxy S22 is powered by a 3,700mAh battery while the iPhone 13 is powered by a 3,240mAh battery. Both phones have support for wireless charge.

The battery of the iPhone 13 will take you for a longer time. This is because it has no 120Hz refresh rate to drain the battery and its chipset is well optimized. It’s not like the battery usage of the S22 is terrible, just that the usage of the iPhone is better.
