Samsung Galaxy S23

The Samsung Galaxy S23 is Samsung’s 2023 flagship phone and is the successor to the Samsung Galaxy S22 released in early 2022. It’s the most compact phone in the Galaxy S23 lineup and if you don’t like a big phone, then you’ll prefer it more than the S23 Ultra and S23+.

Chipset, CPU, and GPU

For its performance, the Samsung Galaxy S23 features the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset just like the other Galaxy S23 phones. This is a 5G chipset built on TSMC’s 4nm process technology and it has an 8-core CPU and the Adreno 740 GPU. The CPU has one 3.36GHz Cortex-X3 performance core, two 2.8GHz Cortex-A715 prime cores, two 2.8GHz Cortex-A710 prime cores, and three 2.0GHz Cortex-A510 efficiency cores.

The chipset in this phone is powerful and features a fast 5G MODEM, fast Wi-Fi, and a powerful ISP and AI engine. The chipset in the Samsung Galaxy S23 is equipped with Qualcomm Spectra packs 18-bit triple Cognitive ISP, Qualcomm Hexagon Processor AI engine, Snapdragon X70 5G Modem-RF system, and Qualcomm FastConnect 7800 Mobile Connectivity System.

Cameras

Samsung Galaxy S23 has a triple rear camera system and a single front camera. On the rear, it has a 50MP main camera that has Dual Pixel PDAF and OIS features. The main camera is supported by a 10MP telephoto camera that has PDAF and 3x optical zoom features, and a 12MP ultra-wide camera that has a Super Steady video feature.

On the front, the Galaxy S23 has a 12MP camera that can record 4k videos and has Dual video call, Auto-HDR, and HDR10+ features. The rear camera can record videos in 8K resolution and has features such as LED flash, auto-HDR, panorama, HDR10+, stereo sound rec., gyro-EIS, etc.

Display, Design, and Durability

Samsung Galaxy S23 has a 6.1-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with a 1080 x 2340 pixels display resolution and support for 120Hz refresh rate and HDR10+. The display has a peak brightness of 1200 nits and is an LTPO panel that can auto-refresh between 1Hz and 120Hz. The front screen is flat and it has a punch hole on top of the screen.

The phone is made of a Glass front (Gorilla Glass Victus 2), glass back (Gorilla Glass Victus 2), and aluminum frame. It features an Armor aluminum frame with tougher drop and scratch resistance and is certified to be IP68 dust/water resistant (up to 1.5m for 30 mins). Its dimension is 146.3 x 70.9 x 7.6 mm (5.76 x 2.79 x 0.30 in) and it weighs about 167 g (5.89 oz).

The phone has slim bezels, a Nano-SIM and eSIM or Dual SIM (2 Nano-SIMs and eSIM, dual stand-by), and stereo speakers with 32-bit/384kHz audio (Tuned by AKG). The volume and power buttons are on the right side of the frame while the USB Type-C port and microphone are at the bottom frame of the phone. There is no 3.5mm headphone jack port and no microSD card slot.

RAM, Storage, and Battery

The Samsung Galaxy S23 has two RAM and storage models. The RAM and storage options are 8GB + 128GB and 8GB + 256GB storage. There is no microSD card slot hence users can expand storage once they exhaust the internal storage.

The battery inside the phone is a 3,900mAh battery with support for 25W (PD3.0) wired fast charging, 10W (Qi/PMA) wireless fast charging, and 4.5W reverse wireless charging. Using the 25W wired charger, you can charge the phone from 0 to 100% in about 40 minutes.

Software and Other Features

Samsung Galaxy S23 boots OneUI 5 based on Android 13 out of the box. The phone will get about five years of major software updates and security patches. You can download and install apps from the Google Play Store on this phone and even download major updates over OTA.
